As a result of two civil wars which lasted from 1989 to 2003 the country lost much of its basic infrastructure and turned the country into one of the poorest in Africa. In 2005 the first free elections were held. In 2017 George Weah was elected president. Weah cited fighting corruption, reforming the economy, combating illiteracy, and improving life conditions as the main targets of his presidency.
